Summer Trip - 2009

Day 7: Travel to Kenya
The Eurostar provided a comfy trip back into London.  A crowded tube ride through twenty-four stops and a rainy bus ride took us to our hotel at Heathrow, and we sorted out our gear for the trip to Nairobi in the morning.

We made the most of our Eurostar trip back to London "Hey - let's buy some pastries in Paris and bring them with us to London."  Yeah - that's a great idea.

Day 8: Travel to Kenya
We bussed over to Heathrow and had one last Starbucks fix before boarding our flight down to the dark continent.  A day-long flight provided lots of time to watch movies, and we watched plenty of them.  When it came time to land in Nairobi, the captain announced that the airport was closed due to a mishap on the runway.  We started heading for Entebbe, Uganda to take on more fuel, but about 30 minutes away from Entebbe, the Nairobi runway was cleared and we were able to turn around and land in Nairobi (albeit about an hour late).  Our driver, Sammy, whisked us through a dark, rainy Nairobi and we holed up for the night at our hotel.  The restaurants were closed and room service unable to understand our order, so we dined on power bars and looked forward to better food at the Governor's Camp tomorrow.  Quote of the day: "A safari airplane lost a wheel while landing and is blocking the runway.  It's quite chaotic down there right now" (announcement from the captain).

Day 9: Travel to Governor's Camp
The Holiday Inn is probably the nicest and safest place to stay in Nairobi (aka "Nairobbery"), and we enjoyed our stay there.  After a big buffet breakfast, Sammy picked us up at 8:30am and drove us to Wilson airport.  Our Air Kenya flight left Nairobi right on time.  A 40-minute flight over the Rift Valley provided some great sightseeing and, after a quick stop at the Siana airstrip to drop off a couple of passengers, we were off to Governor's Camp.
